Dekai Hospital Contract Worker Stabbed, Police Suspect Links to Yahukimo Armed Group

YAHUKIMO, PAPUA HIGHLANDS — A 32-year-old contract worker in the radiology department of Dekai Regional General Hospital, identified by the initials LM, was stabbed by two unidentified assailants in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands. Officers from the Damai Cartenz-2026 Operation suspect that the two attackers may be linked to the Kodap XVI Yahukimo armed group led by Kopi Tua Heluka, commonly referred to by Indonesian authorities as the Armed Criminal Group (KKB).

The attack occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time near the teachers' residential complex of SMA Negeri 1 Dekai. The victim was sitting behind a kiosk when two individuals suddenly attacked him with a sharp weapon. Authorities are investigating the incident and pursuing leads to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Sudden Attack Leaves Victim with Two Stab Wounds

Damai Cartenz-2026 Operation Public Relations Task Force Chief, Commissioner Yusuf Sutejo, explained that the victim was reportedly attacked from his left side and from behind. LM sustained stab wounds to the left side of his abdomen and his right back.

The victim reportedly shouted for help and attempted to defend himself. The two assailants then fled the scene. Residents who heard his cries came to his assistance and transported him to Dekai Regional General Hospital for medical treatment.

According to the police account, when the victim arrived at the hospital, a short, handleless sword-like weapon was reportedly still lodged in his right back. Medical personnel immediately treated him. His condition was subsequently reported to be improving, although he remained under medical supervision.

Police Suspect Links to the Kodap XVI Yahukimo Armed Group

During the initial investigation, authorities gathered information about the physical characteristics of the two suspected attackers. Based on preliminary inquiries, police suspect that the individuals may be connected to the Kodap XVI Yahukimo armed group led by Kopi Tua Heluka.

The suspected connection is one of the key lines of investigation. The Damai Cartenz-2026 joint task force and Yahukimo Police are continuing to examine the available information to identify the perpetrators, establish the motive for the attack, and determine whether other individuals were involved.

However, the identities and respective roles of the suspects have yet to be conclusively established. Investigators are continuing to examine witness statements and physical evidence before drawing final conclusions. Any criminal responsibility must ultimately be determined through the applicable legal process.

Investigators Secure Evidence at the Scene

After receiving the report, officers visited the crime scene, established a police perimeter, and examined the surrounding area. During the search, investigators reportedly found a sharp-weapon handle and a pair of sandals that may be relevant to the incident.

The items were secured for further examination. Investigators are also collecting witness statements and comparing descriptions of the suspected attackers to help narrow the search.

The case was registered under Police Report Number LP/B/57/X/2026/SPKT/Polres Yahukimo/Polda Papua, dated October 23, 2026. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Authorities Pursue Suspects to Protect Local Residents

Damai Cartenz-2026 Operation Chief, Inspector General Faizal Ramadhani, emphasized that the case would be handled professionally and accountably, in accordance with the law and the available evidence. The investigation is intended to identify those responsible and ensure that the legal process proceeds appropriately.

The stabbing of a hospital worker has raised further concerns about civilian safety in Yahukimo. Residents need a secure environment in which to work, access healthcare, conduct business, and carry out their daily activities without fear of violence.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, avoid circulating unverified information, and report any relevant information to law enforcement. Public cooperation may assist investigators in solving the case, while evidence-based law enforcement remains essential to ensuring accountability.
