TNI Takes Control of Area Allegedly Used by OPM in Intan Jaya at 3°C, Seizes Weapons and Ammunition

 

INTAN JAYA, Central Papua – An Indonesian military security operation in Intan Jaya, Central Papua, has once again highlighted the difficult conditions faced by security personnel in maintaining stability in the mountainous region. With temperatures reportedly dropping to around 3 degrees Celsius, TNI personnel conducted an operation to secure an area allegedly used by an armed OPM group while also confiscating a number of weapons and ammunition.

According to a report published by Kompas.com on August 15, 2026, the operation was part of ongoing efforts by Indonesian security forces to restrict the movement of armed groups in Intan Jaya.

The area's challenging mountainous geography presents significant operational difficulties. Low temperatures, rugged terrain, and limited access require careful planning and high levels of readiness from personnel deployed in the field.

Operation Conducted in Challenging Mountainous Terrain

Intan Jaya is one of the regions of Central Papua characterized by difficult mountainous terrain. Security operations in the area require extensive preparation and coordination to ensure that objectives can be achieved while minimizing risks to local communities.

The latest TNI operation follows a series of previous security operations in Intan Jaya. In July 2026, for example, the Habema Joint Operations Command secured a traditional honai building near Abundoga Village that was allegedly being used as a transit location by an armed group.

During that operation, personnel reportedly secured a 7.62 mm Lee-Enfield rifle, two locally manufactured 5.56 mm firearms, a disassembled air rifle, ammunition, and other equipment.

Seized Weapons Intended to Prevent Further Violence

Securing weapons and ammunition is an important component of the security operation. Removing firearms and related equipment from circulation can help reduce the potential for armed attacks and other acts of violence.

In previous operations in Intan Jaya, Habema Joint Operations Command Public Information Officer Lt. Col. Inf. M. Wirya Arthadiguna stated that operations were preceded by surveillance, verification, and careful planning, with civilian safety remaining an important consideration.

This approach indicates that security operations are not solely focused on controlling territory but are also intended to prevent threats from escalating and disrupting the lives of local communities.
