Series of Armed Attacks by KKB in Papua Throughout August: Nine Incidents Leave Seven Dead and Nine Women Hostage

 

PAPUA – A series of violent incidents involving armed criminal groups (KKB), also referred to as the Free Papua Movement (OPM), drew significant attention throughout August 2026. Based on a compilation of reports by detikcom through August 25, 2026, nine attacks were recorded across several areas of Papua Highlands and Central Papua.

The incidents reportedly resulted in seven deaths, five injuries, and the hostage-taking of nine women. The victims included both civilians and security personnel. detikcom report

Five Road Project Workers Killed in Tolikara

One of the deadliest incidents reportedly occurred on August 2, 2026, in the Kali Kabur area of Woniki District, Tolikara.

Five road construction workers from PT Sutan Harauli Jaya were found dead with gunshot wounds and signs of severe physical assault. Five other workers were successfully evacuated alive and received medical treatment.

Security personnel reportedly encountered an armed disturbance during the evacuation. Authorities from the Damai Cartenz Operation stated that the involvement of particular groups was still being investigated based on witness testimony, evidence, and other investigative findings. detikcom report

Two Civilians Shot Near Baliem Valley Festival

On August 8, two civilians were reportedly shot near the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival in Walesi District, Jayawijaya.

The victims, identified by their initials LMO (43) and S (50), were reportedly traveling by vehicle to deliver food to the festival area when their vehicle was fired upon from the side.

Security personnel subsequently moved visitors and festival participants to safer locations, including foreign nationals. The two victims received treatment at Wamena Regional Hospital and were reported to be conscious. detikcom report

Armed Clash Reported in Puncak

On August 16, an armed clash reportedly occurred between Indonesian military personnel and an OPM-linked armed group in a forested area of Eral Makawia District, Puncak Regency.

According to Pangkogabwilhan III Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto, as quoted by detikcom, military personnel had previously called on the armed group to lay down their weapons and surrender. After receiving gunfire, the troops responded.

The report stated that three members of the armed group were killed and that firearms and ammunition were recovered at the scene. detikcom report

Civilian in Tolikara Shot

Also on August 16, a civilian in the Pertamina Lama area of Wenam District, Tolikara, was reportedly shot by an armed group allegedly led by Botak Wanimbo.

The victim suffered an injury to the left calf and was immediately evacuated to the Yonif 511/DY Task Force post for medical treatment.

The TNI subsequently conducted a search operation and investigation into the incident. Security authorities also reaffirmed coordination between the TNI and Polri to maintain public safety in the area. detikcom report

One TNI Soldier Killed in Jila

On August 17, Indonesia's 81st Independence Day, an armed clash occurred in Jila District, Mimika.

Three TNI soldiers reportedly became casualties. One soldier died, while two others were injured.

Security forces subsequently pursued the group involved and strengthened security measures to prevent further disturbances in the Jila area. detikcom report

Nine Women Taken Hostage in Mimika

One day after the clash, on August 18, nine women were reportedly taken hostage in Pasir Putih Village, Jila District.

According to the Mimika Police Chief as quoted by detikcom, a mother identified as Neregingget Magai (48) was shot dead after refusing to be taken by the armed group. Her daughter, Inkolung Aim, was reportedly thrown into a ravine and suffered a broken leg.

Nine other women were reportedly taken by force toward a forested area. One victim, Nemerina Wamang (17), was reportedly in the early stages of pregnancy. Several other victims were elementary school students. detikcom report

The difficult geography of Jila presented additional challenges for security personnel. Access to the area relies heavily on air transportation, making the deployment of personnel dependent on aviation support.

Resident Attacked in Yahukimo

Violence was reported again on August 20 in Yahukimo Regency.

A resident identified as Adit (40) was reportedly attacked in the Jalan Sosial area of Kali Bonto, Dekai. The victim suffered a laceration to the neck and was evacuated to Dekai Regional Hospital.

He received medical treatment and was reported to be conscious. Authorities continued investigating the incident to establish the identity and involvement of those responsible. detikcom report

Police Officer Shot in Tolikara

On the same day, Bripda Jhon Galu Situmorang was reportedly wounded by gunfire while conducting observation near Kuari Bridge, Umage Village, Umage District, Tolikara.

Gunfire struck the police vehicle, with one projectile hitting the officer's left thigh.

After being evacuated, he received medical treatment and was later referred to Bhayangkara Hospital in Jayapura after his condition reportedly deteriorated. Authorities continued investigating the group responsible. detikcom report

Police Vehicle Attacked in Dogiyai

Another security incident occurred on August 23, when five members of an armed group reportedly fired at a police vehicle conducting patrols in Ekimani Village, Kamu Utara District, Dogiyai.

The attackers reportedly fired from a hillside before fleeing toward the slopes of Mount Odedimi.

Police warned that the security situation around the area remained a concern because further disturbances could occur unexpectedly. Authorities also reported that a road blockade was discovered following the shooting. detikcom report

Security Forces Strengthen Measures

The series of incidents throughout August prompted security authorities to strengthen security measures in several vulnerable areas.

In several cases, TNI-Polri personnel evacuated victims, protected civilians, pursued suspected perpetrators, and collected evidence as part of ongoing investigations.

In Jila, for example, the Mimika Police reportedly requested additional support from the Mobile Brigade to strengthen security. The area's difficult terrain means that deploying additional personnel requires careful planning and air transportation support. detikcom report

Civilian Safety Remains a Priority

The series of attacks demonstrates how vulnerable civilians remain in areas affected by armed conflict in Papua.

Construction workers, festival attendees, local residents, women, and children were among those affected by the violence reported during August.

For this reason, alongside law enforcement, civilian protection remains an important component of security operations.

The government and security authorities need to continue ensuring that communities receive adequate protection while all actions against armed groups are carried out within the framework of the law and with consideration for civilian safety.

Nine attacks in a single month demonstrate that security challenges remain serious in several parts of Papua. In response, stronger TNI-Polri coordination, civilian protection, law enforcement, public services, and continued development remain important elements in creating a safer and more stable Papua.
