TPNPB-OPM Claims Responsibility for the Fatal Shooting of an American Pilot in Yahukimo, Authorities Strengthen Security and Law Enforcement Efforts

Yahukimo, Papua Highlands — The armed group known as the West Papua National Liberation Army–Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) has claimed responsibility for the fatal shooting of American pilot Nicholas F. Goselin and the burning of a PT AMA pioneer aircraft in Balinggama Village, Sobaham District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands, on July 2, 2026. The claim was made through an official statement distributed to several media outlets.

According to the group's statement, the attack was carried out by fighters from Kodap XVI Yahukimo, who alleged that the aircraft had violated a flight ban previously announced by the organization within what it describes as its operational area.

TPNPB-OPM Issues Official Claim of Responsibility

In its statement, TPNPB-OPM asserted that the shooting of the pilot and the subsequent burning of the aircraft were conducted under the command of leaders from Kodap XVI Yahukimo.

The group claimed that it had previously issued warnings prohibiting civilian aircraft from entering areas it considers to be under its control. It further alleged that civilian aircraft operating in Papua were being used to transport Indonesian security personnel and logistical supplies into remote areas.

These allegations, however, represent the group's own claims. Indonesian military authorities have rejected similar accusations on previous occasions, stating that pioneer flights primarily serve civilian transportation, logistics, healthcare, education, and essential public services.

TPNPB-OPM's Version of the Incident

According to the chronology presented by TPNPB-OPM, its members were operating near Balinggama when they observed a PT AMA aircraft landing at the local airstrip.

The group claimed that its members opened fire on the aircraft, resulting in the death of the pilot, before setting the aircraft on fire.

These statements reflect the version presented by TPNPB-OPM. Indonesian authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the full sequence of events through crime scene examinations, witness interviews, forensic analysis, and other evidence collected during the investigation.

Threats Against Civilian Aviation Raise Security Concerns

In the same statement, TPNPB-OPM reiterated its warning that civilian aircraft operating in areas it considers part of its operational zone could become targets unless the Papua conflict is resolved according to the group's proposed political framework.

The statement has raised renewed concerns about the safety of civilian aviation in Papua's remote regions, where pioneer aircraft serve as the primary means of transporting food, medical supplies, teachers, healthcare workers, and local residents due to the limited availability of road infrastructure.

Security analysts note that uninterrupted air transportation remains essential for maintaining access to public services and humanitarian assistance in many isolated communities throughout Papua.

Authorities Strengthen Security and Law Enforcement Operations

In response to the incident, Indonesian security forces have reinforced security measures in several high-risk areas while intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend individuals suspected of involvement in the shooting and the destruction of the aircraft.

Officials stated that the operation forms part of broader law enforcement efforts aimed at protecting civilians, safeguarding critical transportation infrastructure, and ensuring that those responsible for violent crimes are brought before the courts.
