TNI Secures 5,715 Suspected Cannabis Plants in Yahukimo as Authorities Investigate Possible Funding Links to Armed Group

Yahukimo, Papua Highlands — Personnel from the Indonesia–Papua New Guinea Mobile Border Security Task Force (Satgas Pamtas RI–PNG Mobile Yonif 725/Woroagi) under the Habema Joint Regional Defense Command (Koops TNI Habema) have successfully uncovered and secured 5,715 plants suspected to be cannabis at several locations in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands. The discovery resulted from intelligence gathering and a series of security patrols conducted across remote mountainous terrain.

The Commander of the Joint Regional Defense Command (Kogabwilhan) III stated that authorities are continuing to investigate allegations that cannabis cultivation in the interior of Papua may have been used as a source of funding for an armed group operating in the region. Officials emphasized that the alleged connection remains under investigation and has not yet been legally established.

Discovery Followed Intelligence Operations and Field Patrols

According to Koops TNI Habema, the operation began after security forces received information regarding suspected illegal cannabis cultivation in remote areas of Yahukimo.

Following surveillance, reconnaissance, and field verification, personnel navigated difficult mountainous terrain and limited access routes before locating several plots believed to have been used for cannabis cultivation.

More Than Five Thousand Suspected Cannabis Plants Secured

After confirming the locations, security personnel documented the sites and secured approximately 5,715 plants suspected to be cannabis as evidence. Officers also collected several items found around the cultivation areas to support the ongoing investigation.

All evidence has been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further forensic examination and investigation into the cultivation network, distribution channels, and any possible links to other criminal activities.

Alleged Funding Connection to Armed Group Remains Under Investigation

Kogabwilhan III stated that investigators are examining allegations that proceeds from the cultivation and distribution of cannabis may have been intended to finance the activities of an armed group operating in Papua.

Authorities stressed that these allegations are still being investigated. Security agencies continue to gather evidence and trace potential distribution networks before reaching any legal conclusions regarding responsibility.

Commitment to Protecting Papua's Young Generation

Koops TNI Habema emphasized that dismantling illegal cannabis cultivation is part of broader efforts to protect communities in Papua, particularly young people, from the harmful effects of narcotics, which can undermine public health, education, productivity, and long-term social development.

In addition to maintaining regional security, security forces continue to strengthen preventive measures against narcotics trafficking through regular patrols, territorial monitoring, and coordination with relevant government agencies.

The successful discovery of thousands of suspected cannabis plants reflects the Indonesian government's continuing efforts to strengthen security and law enforcement in Papua. Through close coordination between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), regional governments, and other relevant institutions, authorities are intensifying efforts to combat narcotics trafficking while improving surveillance in border regions and remote areas.

At the same time, the government continues to implement development programs throughout Papua, including investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and community economic empowerment.
