TNI Comes Under Attack During Humanitarian Evacuation in Yahukimo, Government Reaffirms Commitment to Civilian Protection and Rule of Law

Yahukimo, Highland Papua – Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel came under attack from an armed group identified by authorities as the Free Papua Movement (OPM) while carrying out a humanitarian mission to evacuate the bodies of a married couple who were killed in Yahukimo Regency, Highland Papua. Despite the armed confrontation, the evacuation team successfully completed its mission and transported the victims' bodies to Dekai Regional Hospital for identification.

The incident occurred near the Trans Papua Highway in Seradala District on July 23. According to Major General Yudha Airlangga, Commander of the Habema Joint Regional Defense Command (Koops TNI Habema), the evacuation operation faced significant challenges due to mountainous terrain, adverse weather conditions, rising river levels, and an unstable security situation. As the rescue team approached the location, they encountered armed individuals, resulting in an exchange of gunfire before the evacuation could continue.

Humanitarian Mission Continued Despite Armed Attack

Following efforts to secure the area, the TNI evacuation team successfully recovered the bodies of the married couple and transported them to Dekai Regional Hospital. Meanwhile, search operations continue for another female civilian who is believed to have been killed in the same incident.

Military officials stated that protecting personnel while ensuring the success of the humanitarian mission remained the highest priority throughout the operation.

Victims Identified as Civilians

According to Koops TNI Habema, the victims were civilians who were allegedly shot near the Trans Papua Highway on July 20, 2026. Two of the victims—a husband and wife—have been recovered, while authorities continue searching for the third victim. Security forces are also conducting further investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Civilians

The Indonesian government has reiterated that protecting civilians remains a fundamental priority in maintaining security across Papua. Authorities emphasized that law enforcement efforts against those responsible for violent crimes will continue in accordance with Indonesian law while ensuring the safety of local communities.

The government also continues to strengthen coordination among the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), regional administrations, and other relevant agencies to maintain public security and ensure that essential services remain accessible despite ongoing security challenges.

Security Measures Accompanied by Development Initiatives

In addition to security operations, the government continues to pursue a comprehensive strategy that combines law enforcement with long-term development. Infrastructure projects, improved healthcare and education services, community economic empowerment, and engagement with local traditional and religious leaders remain central pillars of the government's policy for Papua.

Officials maintain that lasting peace can only be achieved by combining effective security measures with sustainable economic and social development.

Renewed Calls to End Violence Against Civilians

The events in Yahukimo once again highlight the severe humanitarian consequences of armed violence for civilians and for personnel carrying out humanitarian missions. Various sectors of society have renewed calls for an immediate end to attacks targeting civilians and have emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law, protecting innocent lives, and maintaining stability to support Papua's continued development and long-term peace.
