Pangkogabwilhan III Reveals Armed Group Weapons in Papua Allegedly Enter Through Domestic and International Routes, Border and Maritime Security Tightened

Timika, Central Papua — Commander of the Joint Regional Defense Command III (Kogabwilhan III), Lieutenant General Lucky Avianto, revealed that firearms used by armed groups operating in Papua are believed to originate from both domestic and international sources. The findings have prompted Indonesian security authorities to intensify surveillance along suspected smuggling routes in an effort to prevent the flow of illegal weapons and ammunition into Papua.

Speaking during the presentation of Kogabwilhan III's First Semester 2026 operational results in Timika, Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto explained that illegal weapons trafficking remains one of the primary security challenges in Papua. He emphasized that stronger coordination among security institutions is essential to disrupt supply networks supporting armed groups.

Weapons Allegedly Supplied Through Domestic and Overseas Networks

According to Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto, operational evaluations indicate that firearms recovered from armed groups are suspected to have entered Papua through multiple channels, including domestic networks as well as cross-border routes originating outside Indonesia.

These findings have encouraged authorities to strengthen monitoring along land borders, maritime corridors, and other strategic entry points that could potentially be exploited for illegal weapons smuggling.

He stressed that even small quantities of illegally trafficked firearms and ammunition could pose significant risks to public safety and regional stability.

Security Forces Intensify Monitoring of Smuggling Routes

In response, Kogabwilhan III, together with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and other government agencies, has increased security operations along suspected weapons trafficking routes.

Beyond expanding patrols and surveillance activities, authorities are strengthening inter-agency cooperation to reduce the operational space of criminal networks believed to be involved in supplying weapons to armed groups in Papua.

These measures form part of a broader strategy aimed at preventing illegal arms trafficking while enhancing security for communities throughout the region.

Security Operations Result in the Seizure of Firearms and Ammunition

During its First Semester 2026 operational briefing, Kogabwilhan III also reported significant operational achievements, including the seizure of dozens of firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and other evidence believed to be linked to armed group activities.

According to Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto, these confiscations may help prevent the weapons from being used in future acts of violence that could endanger both civilians and security personnel.

Security Operations Focus on Protecting Communities

Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto emphasized that the presence of security forces in vulnerable areas is not solely intended for security operations but also to protect local communities and ensure the continued delivery of government services.

He noted that maintaining security is essential for creating a stable environment where residents can safely carry out their daily activities while allowing regional development programs to continue without disruption.

Security Stability Supports Papua's Long-Term Development

The Indonesian government continues to regard security stability as a fundamental pillar of Papua's long-term development. Alongside strengthened law enforcement against illegal arms trafficking and armed violence, the government is continuing investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and community economic empowerment throughout the region.

Cooperation among the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the central government, regional administrations, law enforcement agencies, customary leaders, religious leaders, and local communities is expected to create a safer environment that supports investment, public services, and sustainable development.

Kogabwilhan III also reaffirmed that its operations prioritize the protection of civilians and public facilities as part of broader efforts to maintain peace, security, and stability across Papua.
