Coordinating Minister Condemns Killing of American Pilot in Papua, Government Orders Manhunt and Strengthens Security Measures

Jakarta — Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Djamari Chaniago, has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of American pilot Nicholas F. Goselin in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands. The government described the attack as an unacceptable act of violence and instructed security forces to pursue those responsible while reinforcing security across Papua, particularly around critical aviation routes.

The incident occurred on July 2, 2026, when an aircraft operated by Associated Mission Aviation (AMA) and piloted by Goselin came under attack shortly after landing at Balinggama Airstrip in Sobaham District. Following the shooting, the aircraft was set on fire by the armed group, resulting in its complete destruction.

Government Strongly Condemns the Attack

In an official statement, Coordinating Minister Djamari Chaniago expressed his condolences over the death of Nicholas F. Goselin while firmly condemning the shooting and the burning of the aircraft, which authorities believe was carried out by an armed criminal group (KKB).

According to the minister, the attack not only claimed an innocent life but also threatened public security in Papua and disrupted aviation services that serve as a vital lifeline for communities living in remote mountainous regions.

He emphasized that those responsible must be brought to justice in accordance with Indonesian law and should not be allowed to continue committing acts of violence that endanger civilians.

Government Orders Military and Police to Pursue the Perpetrators

The Indonesian government reaffirmed its full support for the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in pursuing those believed to be responsible for the attack.

The Coordinating Minister instructed security agencies to take firm legal action while reinforcing protection at strategic locations, including airports throughout Papua, to ensure the continued safety of civilian aviation.

These measures are considered essential because air transportation remains the primary means of delivering food supplies, medical services, educational support, and public transportation to many isolated communities where road access is extremely limited.

Habema Joint Operations Continue the Manhunt

Meanwhile, the Habema Joint Operations Command (Koops Habema) continues its operation to locate and apprehend members of the armed group suspected of carrying out the attack.

Earlier, personnel from Koops Habema successfully evacuated the body of Nicholas F. Goselin from the incident site through a carefully coordinated operation involving ground troops and two Caracal helicopters.

Military officials stated that the evacuation was conducted with strict security precautions due to the difficult mountainous terrain surrounding the airstrip.

Security Presence to Be Increased Across Papua

As part of the government's response, the Joint Regional Defense Command III (Kogabwilhan III) announced plans to deploy additional security personnel to several vulnerable areas throughout Papua.

The additional deployment is intended to strengthen civilian protection, secure strategic public facilities, and ensure that civilian flights and essential public services can continue operating safely.

Authorities are also coordinating closely with regional governments, aviation operators, and other relevant institutions to reduce security risks while maintaining the uninterrupted distribution of essential goods and public services to remote communities.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Development in Papua

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of maintaining security as the foundation for Papua's long-term development. The Indonesian government emphasized that law enforcement against perpetrators of armed violence will continue alongside efforts to accelerate infrastructure development, improve healthcare and education, and strengthen community economic empowerment programs.

Through close cooperation among security agencies, the central government, regional administrations, customary leaders, religious leaders, and local communities, the government aims to create a more stable environment where public services, economic activity, and regional development can continue without disruption.

The government also stressed that protecting civilian aviation remains a top priority, as air transportation provides essential access to healthcare, education, logistics, and other basic services for many remote communities across Papua.
