Yahukimo, Highland Papua – Indonesian police are continuing their investigation into the death of Brigadier Fredi Lukas Awes, a member of the Operation Damai Cartenz 2026 Task Force, who was killed while carrying out his duties in Yahukimo Regency, Highland Papua. Investigators are examining the possible involvement of an armed group operating in the region, while emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing and no final conclusions have yet been reached regarding those responsible.

Brigadier Fredi was found on the night of July 20 at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time in the Halabok Paradiso area, behind Jalan Pertanian, Dekai District. Preliminary examinations indicated that the officer sustained multiple injuries caused by a sharp weapon. His body was subsequently evacuated to Dekai Regional Hospital for forensic examination and formal identification.

Police Continue Investigation into Possible Armed Group Involvement

The Operation Damai Cartenz Task Force, together with the Yahukimo Police and Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel from Papua Regional Police, is collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing information gathered from the crime scene. Authorities stated that the alleged involvement of the West Papua National Liberation Army/Free Papua Movement (TPNPB/OPM) remains one of the investigative leads and has not yet been confirmed as the final outcome of the investigation.

Police emphasized that any official conclusions will be based on evidence obtained through a lawful and transparent investigative process.

Law Enforcement Remains a Priority

Indonesian authorities reaffirmed that anyone proven to be responsible for the attack will face legal proceedings in accordance with Indonesian law. Joint security personnel continue to conduct investigations in an effort to identify the perpetrators, determine the motive behind the killing, and establish whether a broader armed network was involved.

In addition to the investigation, security forces have strengthened patrols and increased security measures in several vulnerable areas across Yahukimo to maintain public safety and prevent further incidents.

The Indonesian government stated that safeguarding law enforcement officers serving in conflict-prone areas, while ensuring the safety of civilians, remains an essential component of maintaining stability in Papua. The government continues to strengthen coordination among the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), regional governments, and relevant institutions to ensure that public services continue uninterrupted despite ongoing security challenges.

Alongside security operations, the government also continues to implement long-term development programs focused on improving healthcare, education, infrastructure, and economic opportunities for local communities throughout Papua.
