Wanted KKB Operations Commander in Yahukimo Killed While Attempting to Flee into Forest, Authorities Reaffirm Commitment to Law Enforcement in Papua

 


Yahukimo, Papua Highlands — The attempted escape of a wanted operations commander of an Armed Criminal Group (KKB) came to an end in Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands, after joint personnel from the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force and the Yahukimo Regional Police carried out a law enforcement operation. Authorities took measured action after the suspect allegedly attempted to flee and ignored repeated warnings while officers were trying to make an arrest.

The individual, identified by the initials AP, also known as Y and AS, was reported to be the Operations Commander of the HSSBI Battalion (Muara Kali Heluk, Seng, Sulo, Baliem, Indol) under Kodap XVI Yahukimo. He had been on the authorities’ wanted list for approximately two months due to his alleged involvement in a number of armed violence incidents in the Yahukimo area.

The successful operation is being viewed as part of broader efforts by security forces to maintain stability and protect local communities from the threat of armed violence in Papua.


Two-Month Manhunt Ends in Dekai

According to security authorities, AP was believed to play a significant role within the armed group operating in Yahukimo. He had been listed as a fugitive because of his alleged involvement in a series of violent criminal acts that disrupted public security in the region.

After conducting surveillance and gathering intelligence over an extended period, authorities reportedly located the suspect in the Logpon Road area, Kilometer 7, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency. The arrest operation was carried out on June 17, 2026.

Officials stated that the operation was conducted based on intelligence findings and formed part of ongoing efforts to pursue individuals suspected of involvement in armed criminal activities.


Chronology of the Arrest Attempt and Escape into the Forest

Authorities reported that when officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, he allegedly tried to escape toward a nearby forested area. Security personnel issued warnings and followed established operational procedures in an effort to stop the suspect and carry out the arrest peacefully.

According to officials, the suspect ignored repeated warnings and continued attempting to flee. Security personnel then took what authorities described as measured action in accordance with standard operating procedures.

The suspect was eventually subdued but was later pronounced dead. Officials stated that officers had fired warning shots before taking further action.

Authorities emphasized that the operation followed applicable legal procedures and was carried out in accordance with operational guidelines governing law enforcement actions.

The Cartenz Peace Operation leadership stated that the operation reflected the continued commitment of security forces to enforcing the law against individuals involved in violent acts that threaten public safety and disrupt stability in Papua.

Officials stressed that all actions taken during the operation were conducted within the framework of applicable laws and regulations and in accordance with principles of professionalism and accountability.

According to security authorities, efforts to identify, pursue, and prosecute perpetrators of armed violence remain essential to creating a safer environment where communities can carry out daily activities, including education, healthcare, and economic development.
