Tracking Down Armed Criminal Group Members in Papua: Four Fugitives Captured by the Cartenz Peace Operation Within One Month

Papua — Throughout June 2026, Indonesia's Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force recorded a series of major breakthroughs in law enforcement operations targeting members of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) allegedly involved in multiple violent incidents across Papua. Within less than a month, four wanted suspects were successfully apprehended through coordinated operations conducted in several regions, including Central Papua and the Papua Highlands.

The four suspects, identified by the initials YM, AP, AB, and PP, are alleged to have been involved in a range of violent offenses, including shootings, attacks against security personnel, and incidents resulting in fatalities. Authorities emphasized that every operation was carried out based on intelligence gathering, criminal investigations, and in accordance with Indonesian law.

Early June: Suspect in Freeport Employee Shooting Arrested in Puncak

The series of operations began on June 6, 2026, when the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force arrested YM at Kago Market in Puncak Regency, Central Papua.

According to investigators, YM is suspected of participating in the shooting of a PT Freeport Indonesia employee in Tembagapura District in March 2026. Authorities allege that YM played a role in monitoring the movements of security personnel and civilians during the attack.

The arrest followed an extensive investigation and was based on police reports and intelligence gathered over several weeks.

Yahukimo KKB Operations Commander Located After Intelligence Operation

The operation continued on June 17, 2026, when authorities located AP, who was identified as the Operations Commander of the HSSBI Battalion under Kodap XVI Yahukimo.

The investigation began with a raid on a house in Dekai that investigators believed had been used as a temporary hideout by members of the armed group. During the search, officers recovered ammunition, bladed weapons, traditional bows and arrows, mobile phones, and other items believed to be connected to the group's activities.

Information obtained during the investigation eventually led security personnel to AP's location.

Authorities stated that when officers attempted to arrest him, AP fled toward a nearby forest. Security personnel reportedly issued warning shots in accordance with operational procedures before taking what officials described as measured action. AP later died during the operation and was subsequently evacuated to Dekai Regional Hospital.

Two More KKB Members in Yahukimo Brought into Custody

Several days later, the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force successfully apprehended two additional members of KKB Kodap XVI Yahukimo, identified as AB and BK.

Investigators allege that AB was involved in the shooting of a Marine Task Force armored vehicle in Dekai in December 2025. During the arrest operation, authorities stated that the suspect attempted to flee, prompting officers to respond in accordance with established law enforcement procedures.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of ammunition, mobile phones, communication devices, an optical scope, documents, and other equipment believed to be associated with the armed group's activities.

Fugitive Wanted for Police Officer's Killing in Intan Jaya Arrested

Another major breakthrough came on June 24, 2026, when authorities arrested PP in Bajemba Village, Sugapa District, Intan Jaya Regency.

PP had been on the authorities' wanted list for approximately two years for his alleged involvement in the attack on the Task Force Tower Post in January 2024, an incident in which Briptu (Posthumously Promoted) Alvando Steve Karamoy lost his life while on duty.

Following the arrest, the suspect was transferred to the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force headquarters for further investigation. Officers also confiscated a mobile phone believed to contain information related to the activities of the armed network operating in the region.

Law Enforcement Conducted in Accordance with Legal Procedures

The Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force emphasized that every operation was carried out based on criminal investigations, sufficient preliminary evidence, and established operational standards.

Authorities stated that each suspect will undergo legal proceedings in accordance with Indonesian law. Investigators are also continuing to develop the cases to identify additional individuals or networks potentially connected to acts of armed violence across Papua.

Officials stressed that law enforcement efforts remain focused on protecting civilians while ensuring accountability for individuals responsible for violent criminal offenses.

Security Remains the Foundation for Papua's Development

The Indonesian government continues to emphasize the importance of balancing law enforcement with accelerated regional development throughout Papua. Alongside legal action against perpetrators of armed violence, the government is expanding infrastructure projects, improving healthcare services, increasing access to education, and strengthening community economic empowerment programs.

Many observers believe that a stable security environment is essential for sustainable development in Papua. Through cooperation among security agencies, local governments, customary leaders, religious leaders, and local communities, authorities aim to strengthen stability so that economic activity, education, public services, and community development can continue without disruption.
