Remaining OPM Ammunition Explodes in Lanny Jaya, Teen Searching for Coconuts Killed, Authorities Strengthen Security and Public Safety Awareness

Lanny Jaya, Papua Highlands — An 18-year-old teenager, Endite Wea, was killed after an explosion believed to have originated from leftover ammunition or explosive materials in a former Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat–Organisasi Papua Merdeka (TPNPB-OPM) camp area in Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua Highlands. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday (June 7) while the victim and several residents were searching for wild coconuts near the site.

According to security officials, the explosion took place in an area previously identified as a former TPNPB-OPM Kodap XII/Lanny Jaya base led by Purom Okiman Wenda. Preliminary findings indicate that the blast may have been caused by abandoned ammunition or explosive materials left behind in the area.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by unexploded ammunition and explosive remnants that may remain in former armed group activity zones, particularly for residents carrying out daily activities in remote areas of Papua.

Chronology of the Incident

Based on information provided by security authorities, the explosion occurred in Toemalo Village, Melagi District, Lanny Jaya Regency. At the time, a group of residents from Toemalo Village, Mbu Village, and Wunabunggu Village were gathering and burning wild coconuts in the area.

During the activity, an explosion suddenly occurred, killing Endite Wea at the scene. Residents immediately reported the incident to security personnel stationed at the nearest security post. Authorities, together with local residents, conducted an initial assessment and collected witness statements to determine the cause of the explosion.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the blast likely originated from leftover ammunition or explosive materials that had remained in the former armed group camp area for an extended period. However, authorities continue to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Authorities Strengthen Security Measures and Investigation

Following the incident, personnel from the TNI Habema Joint Regional Defense Command Task Force (Koops TNI Habema), together with local residents, carried out inspections and monitoring activities around the explosion site. These measures were taken to identify any additional hazardous materials that could pose a threat to public safety.

Authorities also urged residents to avoid entering former armed group camp areas that may still contain unexploded ammunition or dangerous explosive materials. The warning was issued as a preventive measure to avoid further casualties.

In addition, security forces continue to conduct investigations and mapping operations to ensure that conditions around the affected area remain under control.

Commitment to Protecting Local Communities

Security authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting local communities from threats that could endanger public safety, including risks associated with explosive remnants left behind in former armed group operating areas.

In addition to securing affected locations, authorities are increasing public awareness campaigns regarding the dangers of explosive materials and the importance of immediately reporting suspicious objects found in the field.

These efforts are expected to improve community awareness and help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Government Strengthens Stability and Public Safety in Papua

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government continues to strengthen efforts to maintain stability and security in Papua through an approach that combines security measures, community protection, and regional development.

In addition to law enforcement actions against armed groups involved in violent activities, the government continues to promote infrastructure development, healthcare improvements, educational services, and economic empowerment programs across Papua.

Through cooperation between security forces, regional governments, community leaders, and local residents, the government hopes to create a safer and more stable environment so that communities can carry out their daily activities without fear.
