Koops TNI Habema Secures Three Villages in Yahukimo Following OPM Disturbances, Government Strengthens Civilian Protection and Stability in Papua

Yahukimo, Papua Highlands — The TNI Habema Operational Command (Koops TNI Habema) has conducted a security operation in three villages in Manggelum District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands, following security disturbances allegedly carried out by armed groups affiliated with the TPNPB-OPM under the leadership of Kopi Tua Heluka and Dejang Heluka.

The operation, carried out in early June 2026, aimed to restore security, protect local residents, and ensure that community activities could resume normally. The initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to maintain security stability and accelerate development throughout the Papua Highlands region.

According to Koops TNI Habema, previous security disturbances had created fear among residents and prompted several families to temporarily leave their homes for safer locations. As a result, security personnel were deployed to restore order and create conditions that would allow residents to safely return to their villages.

Chronology of the Security Operation

The security operation was conducted on June 9, 2026, in three villages: Manggelum Village, Mangga Tiga Village, and Kewam Village in Manggelum District, Yahukimo Regency.

Koops TNI Habema personnel carried out patrols and area-clearing operations in locations that had reportedly been used by armed groups. The presence of security forces was intended to verify conditions on the ground while providing reassurance and protection to affected communities.

By the time security personnel arrived, the armed group had reportedly withdrawn from the area and crossed the Dogoel River. The operation was completed without armed confrontation or casualties.

During the search operation, security forces recovered several items believed to have been used by the armed group, including improvised firearms, air rifles, optical sights, mobile phones, bows, arrows, and other equipment.

Residents Encouraged to Return Home and Resume Daily Activities

Following the operation and the restoration of security conditions, Koops TNI Habema encouraged residents who had temporarily fled the area to return to their villages and resume their normal activities.

Security authorities stated that personnel would continue to maintain a presence in the area to ensure public safety and prevent future disturbances. The measure is considered important for restoring public services and community life.

With improved security conditions, schools, healthcare facilities, local government services, and economic activities are expected to operate normally once again.

Security and Humanitarian Approaches Implemented Together

Koops TNI Habema emphasized that the operation was not solely focused on security measures but also aimed at creating a safe environment where communities can carry out social and economic activities without fear.

Security stability is regarded as a crucial foundation for the success of development programs in Papua, including infrastructure projects, educational improvements, healthcare services, and community economic empowerment.

For this reason, security personnel continue to combine territorial security efforts with communication, community engagement, and outreach initiatives aimed at supporting local residents.

Government Continues to Strengthen Stability and Development in Papua

The Indonesian government continues to implement a strategy that integrates security, development, and community empowerment as part of its efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous Papua.

In addition to protecting communities from security threats, the government continues to expand infrastructure projects, improve access to education and healthcare, and promote economic growth across various regions of Papua.

The successful securing of the three villages in Manggelum District is viewed as an important step toward restoring stability in Yahukimo. Through cooperation among local communities, customary leaders, regional authorities, and security forces, authorities hope to maintain a conducive environment that supports continued development and improved welfare throughout Papua.
