Armed Criminal Group Member Wanted for Two Years in Connection with Police Officer's Killing in Intan Jaya Arrested, Authorities Reaffirm Commitment to Law Enforcement

Intan Jaya, Central Papua — The Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force has arrested a member of an Armed Criminal Group (KKB), identified by the initials PP (25), also known as P, who had been on the authorities' wanted list for two years for his alleged involvement in the attack on the Task Force Tower Post in Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua. During the incident, which occurred in January 2024, Indonesian police officer Briptu (Posthumously Promoted) Alvando Steve Karamoy was killed while carrying out his duties.

Authorities described the arrest as part of their continuing efforts to enforce the law against individuals involved in armed violence while maintaining security and stability throughout Papua. Officials emphasized that the operation was conducted in accordance with applicable legal procedures and guided by the principles of professionalism and accountability.

Fugitive Captured After Two-Year Manhunt

PP was arrested by personnel from the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force in Bajemba Village, Sugapa District, Intan Jaya Regency, on Wednesday, June 24, at approximately 2:00 p.m. local time, following an extended investigation and intelligence-gathering operation aimed at locating his whereabouts.

During the arrest, officers also confiscated a mobile phone believed to contain information relevant to the activities of the armed group operating in Intan Jaya.

After being taken into custody, the suspect was transferred to the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force headquarters for further questioning as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.

Suspected Involvement in the Fatal Shooting of a Police Officer

Based on preliminary investigative findings, authorities believe PP was directly involved in the attack on the Task Force Tower Post in Intan Jaya on January 19, 2024, which resulted in the death of Briptu (Posthumously Promoted) Alvando Steve Karamoy.

Investigators stated that the allegation is based on official police reports and evidence gathered during the investigation. Authorities are also continuing to examine whether the suspect may have been involved in other security-related incidents that occurred in Intan Jaya during 2026.

Officials emphasized that these additional allegations remain under investigation and will be assessed through due legal process and evidence presented during the investigation.

Legal Proceedings to Follow Indonesian Law

Police officials stated that the suspect has been charged under several provisions of Indonesia's Criminal Code (Law No. 1 of 2023) relating to homicide and other relevant criminal offenses.

Depending on the outcome of judicial proceedings and the evidence presented before the court, the charges could carry severe criminal penalties, including life imprisonment or capital punishment under applicable Indonesian law.

Authorities stressed that all charges remain subject to judicial examination and that the suspect's legal rights will be respected throughout the criminal justice process.

Security Forces Reaffirm Commitment to Maintaining Peace in Papua

The leadership of the Cartenz Peace Operation stated that the successful arrest reflects the security forces' ongoing commitment to taking legal action against individuals responsible for armed violence that threatens both civilians and law enforcement personnel.

Officials emphasized that every security operation is conducted professionally, proportionately, and in accordance with Indonesian law while respecting established operational procedures.

Investigators also confirmed that the case remains under development as authorities seek to identify any additional individuals or networks that may have been connected to violent incidents in Intan Jaya.
