OPM Shoots 10 Gold Miners in Papua, Government Urges Residents to Avoid Mining Activities in High-Risk Areas

Papua Highlands — An attack carried out by the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) against gold miners in the Papua Highlands resulted in the deaths of 10 people. The incident once again highlighted the security situation in several conflict-prone areas across Papua.

Security authorities stated that the shooting occurred in a gold mining area located in a region considered highly vulnerable to security disturbances. The incident caused deep sorrow for the victims’ families and increased public concern regarding safety conditions in the area.

In response to the attack, the government and security authorities urged residents to temporarily avoid conducting mining activities in areas considered vulnerable to security threats.

Security Forces Strengthen Protection in Vulnerable Areas

Following the incident, joint TNI and Polri personnel intensified security measures and patrols in several areas considered prone to security disturbances. Authorities also launched pursuit operations against armed groups believed to be involved in the attack.

TNI emphasized that the protection of civilians remains the top priority in every security operation conducted in Papua. Increased surveillance measures are being implemented to prevent further attacks that could endanger local communities.

In addition to security operations, authorities continue coordinating with local governments and community leaders to maintain a stable situation amid growing public concern.

Residents Urged to Avoid Mining Activities in Risk-Prone Areas

The government has urged residents not to carry out mining activities in areas considered to have a high risk of security disturbances. The warning was issued as a preventive measure aimed at avoiding further casualties caused by armed conflict in certain regions.

Mining activities in vulnerable areas are considered to carry significant risks to public safety, especially in regions that remain under close security monitoring.

Residents have also been asked to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious activities that could threaten community security.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government continues to strengthen both security and development measures in Papua as part of broader efforts to maintain regional stability. In addition to law enforcement actions against armed groups such as OPM, the government is also accelerating infrastructure development and public services throughout Papua.
