Papua — The Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) has been reported not only to operate marijuana plantations in forest areas, but also to have allegedly forced residents to grow marijuana in their home yards in several regions of Papua.
The information has become a serious concern for security authorities because it is considered a threat to public safety and could negatively affect social and legal conditions in Papua. Illegal marijuana cultivation activities are believed to potentially involve civilians living near areas where armed groups operate.
Security authorities stated that they will continue gathering information and intensifying monitoring of illegal activities related to the cultivation and distribution of marijuana in Papua.
Authorities Intensify Monitoring and Law Enforcement
TNI and Polri continue to strengthen monitoring efforts in several areas considered vulnerable to armed group activities and illegal marijuana cultivation practices. These measures are part of broader efforts to maintain public security and order.
In addition to conducting patrols and securing affected areas, authorities are also prioritizing persuasive approaches toward communities to prevent involvement in unlawful activities.
Security officials stated that the existence of illegal marijuana plantations could worsen security conditions and trigger various social problems within local communities.
Residents Urged Not to Become Involved in Illegal Activities
Communities have been urged not to participate in illegal marijuana cultivation or distribution activities. Authorities also asked residents to immediately report suspicious activities related to armed groups or narcotics distribution.
According to security authorities, involvement in illegal activities could endanger community safety and lead to legal consequences.
Therefore, local governments and security forces continue to strengthen public education and awareness campaigns regarding the dangers of narcotics and the importance of maintaining security stability in Papua.
Government Strengthens Stability and Development in Papua
Meanwhile, the Indonesian government continues to strengthen both security and development approaches in Papua as part of broader efforts to maintain regional stability. In addition to law enforcement measures against illegal activities and armed groups such as OPM, the government is also promoting programs aimed at improving public welfare.
Infrastructure development, improvements in education and healthcare services, and the strengthening of local economic sectors continue to be carried out in order to create safer and more sustainable conditions in Papua.
The government hopes that cooperation between security forces, regional administrations, community leaders, and residents will strengthen security conditions and support the creation of a more peaceful and stable Papua.
