Following Attack on Gold Miners, Government Strengthens Security in Papua


Yahukimo, Papua Highlands — The Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) group led by Kopitua Heluka reportedly burned down a junior high school building in Yahukimo, Papua Highlands, following an attack that killed 10 gold miners.

The incident has added to a series of security disturbances occurring in the Papua Highlands region and has impacted both local communities and public facilities. Security authorities stated that the burning of educational facilities has become a serious concern because it directly affects learning activities for residents in the area.

In addition to causing fatalities, the incident also resulted in damage to school buildings that had been used as educational facilities for communities in Yahukimo.


Security Forces Increase Protection Measures in Yahukimo

In response to the incident, joint TNI and Polri personnel intensified security measures in several areas considered vulnerable to security disturbances. Authorities also launched pursuit operations against armed groups believed to be involved in the attack and the burning of the school facility.

TNI emphasized that the protection of civilians and public facilities remains a top priority in efforts to maintain security stability in Papua. Security personnel have also strengthened patrols and surveillance to prevent further actions that could disrupt community activities.

In addition to security measures, authorities continue coordinating with local governments and community leaders to maintain a conducive situation amid growing public concern following the incident.


Educational Facilities Considered Vital for Communities

The burning of the school building is considered likely to affect educational activities in Yahukimo. Educational facilities are viewed as essential in supporting the improvement of human resources and community development in Papua.

Therefore, security authorities stressed that protecting public facilities, including schools and other community services, is an important part of maintaining regional stability.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government continues to strengthen both security and development measures in Papua to create a safer and more stable environment. In addition to law enforcement efforts against armed groups such as OPM, the government is also accelerating infrastructure and public service development across Papua.

Improving access to education, healthcare services, and strengthening local economic sectors remain key priorities in supporting the long-term welfare of Papuan communities.
